Mercedes-Benz . Dent Repair TechniquesDents on the side of your car can make even a new car look bad. Old or new, the cost of dent repair can be expensive, especially if the dents are extensive. Collision repair shops charge by the hour for dent repair, plus the cost of materials. This can add up quickly and cost several hundred dollars -- per dent. By following some easy-to-learn steps, you can repair your own dents. Once finished, paint them yourself or take the repaired car to a professional painter and pay for the paint job only. Paintless Dent Removal Some dents may be repaired without special tools or even paint. Inspect the dent closely and make sure there are no chips or cracks in the paint before using this method. If chips or cracks are present and expose bare metal, they will need to be refinished and painted. Rust can set in through even the smallest area of exposed bare metal, eventually rotting the metal panel under the paint. Wet the dent with water and a small amount of dish soap or car wash soap. Place a regular household plunger on the dent and put pressure on it until suction is created. Pull the plunger in and out in a plunging motion until the dent pops out. This doesn't always work, but if it does, you are finished without any further repair. General Dents Most dents fall into this repair category and need special tools to be repaired properly. To repair a regular dent you need a grinder, body hammer, slide hammer, body filler, plastic squeegee, sanding block, dual action sander, sand paper, wax and grease remover and a microfiber cloth. All of these can be found at a regular automotive parts store. Begin by drilling multiple holes in the dent. Place the screw tip of the slide hammer in each hole, one at a time, and pull the handle of the slide hammer. This pulls the metal out with each pull of the handle. Move the slide hammer to different holes to pull the metal as evenly as possible. Once the dent is as close to the original position as possible use a grinder to grind in and around the dent. Grind the area inside the dent and about 3 to 4 inches around the dent. Grind until all paint and primer is gone. Apply a thick layer of body filler over the dent so that it is higher than the surrounding surface of the car. Allow the filler to dry for an hour. Use a sanding block or dual action sander with 80-grit sandpaper to smooth the body filler. Sand until the filler is level with the car's surface, then sand it again using 120-grit paper. This smoothes the deep groves left by the 80-grit paper. The repair should now be visible, but not felt when rubbing your hand over the area. Wipe the area with wax and grease remover using a microfiber cloth. Apply masking tape and paper around the repaired areas to keep overspray off of other parts of the car. Spray two thin coats of primer over the repairs. Continue with more steps if you are painting it yourself or bring it to a painter. The primer is still needed to protect the filler from the elements. A painter will sand it down and begin from that point. Refinishing If you are refinishing the repairs yourself, you need masking tape and paper (not newspaper), primer, paint and clear coat. Use automotive spray paint found at an automotive supply store or regular automotive paint and a paint gun if you have an air compressor. Apply a total of two thin coats of primer, allowing each coat 30 minutes to dry. Use 300-grit sandpaper and a sanding block or dual action sander to lightly smooth the primer. Wipe the area with wax and grease remover again. Spray three to five thin coats of paint, waiting 15 minutes between each coat. Wait three hours after the final coat is sprayed before applying three to five thin coats of clear coat paint. Follow the same method for the clear coat paint as you did with the regular paint. Remove the masking tape and paper 30 minutes after the final coat and a full day before moving the car.
Mercedes-Benz . How to Repair & Paint an Aluminum PropellerThe propeller on a boat can take a lot of abuse depending on what type of area your boat is used in. For boats used for fishing in ponds, lakes and streams, propellers can be damaged on stumps, logs, rocks or animals under the water's surface. The propeller can also be damaged while being loaded or unloaded from a boat trailer. Aluminum is strong, but is a softer metal than most. It can be repaired, painted and refinished to look like new, but the performance won't be as good as a perfectly new propeller. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Welding machine Aluminum welding wire Welding gloves Welding hood Grinder Marine paint Step by Step : 1 Remove the propeller from the boat and place it on a flat, sturdy surface. The damaged side should be facing up with easy access to it. If the edge needs welding, place the edge of that blade near the edge of the surface. 2 Put on the welding hood and gloves before welding. Make sure the welding wire is correctly being fed into the machine by checking it before use. Turn the welding machine on and begin welding. Start on the left of the damage and work to the right if you are right handed. Work the opposite direction if you are left handed. 3 Allow the weld to cool completely, which takes about 20 minutes. Once the metal is cool, use a grinder to carefully shape the weld to blend it with the shape of the propeller and smooth it out. 4 Sand the propeller with 120 grit sandpaper until the entire propeller is dull. Wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove any dust particles or fingerprints. 5 Spray three coats of aluminum oxide primer on the propeller. Wait 30 minutes for each coat to dry before applying the next. Allow 3 hours for the primer to dry completely. 6 Apply three to five coats of paint on the propeller, waiting at least 15 minutes between each coat. Wait a full day for all of the paint to dry before handling the propeller. Tips & Warnings Even though aluminum propellers can be welded to look good, a significant amount of strength is lost. If the propeller is missing large chunks or the blades are severely bent, the entire propeller should be replaced and is not worth repairing. Never weld without welding gloves and hood. Welding can cause severe eye damage if done without a welding hood.
